Welcome to a World by Design!
-
Welcome to a world by design a community-based design thinking module.
-
In this module, we will empathize with our community by conducting a design thinking strategy called AEIOU and performing interviews with members of our community who symbolize key transitional figures (ex., child, teen, adult, elderly)
-
In the Defining Problem phase, we will document our community problems using storytelling, which will collect quotes from our community and complete the critical items diagram to determine items critical for our communities ideal future.
-
In this step, we will combine the results from our vision cone with our research from our empathizing and defining phases and create a simulation/ digital story of our current status quo.
-
In the Collaborative Ideation phase, we will collectively and independently brainstorm solutions to achieve our ideal future while simultaneously solving our community member’s problems.
-
In the Prototyping phase, we will encourage our community members to break off into teams to create low-cost solutions to our community’s problems that are also aligned with our ideal future.
-
In the Testing phase, we will explore what our community thinks about the solutions proposed in Feedback Capture Grid. The information from our community will allow us to proceed or continue seeking the best solutions to help us achiever our ideal community.
Collaborate with your team to create a narrative of your customers story…….
Step 1.
A Vision Cone
A vision cone connects current innovative developments with the past and an ideal future. It's the perfect exercise for imagining something new or a more desired outcome it works by breaking down the possible future, in actionable steps. Work individually, and then convene as a team in 2-5 member groups to develop the vision cone. Spend 30 mins defining the status quo and 30 mins for depicting the past and 30 mins developing a possible future. Finally spend the rest of the time reverse engineering the required steps.
Step 2.
Together define the problem of your customer and why the problem persist.
AEIOU
How can we understand the world our persona or target market comes from and the problem they experience? We can use an observational tool called AEIOU which will help us understand the environment in relation to the problem. Work in 2-5 member groups: observe user behavior and environment with one interacting and the other documenting. Or work individually to create AEIOU based off of a possible or current customer/ user. Then, convene as a team to compare and contrast findings.
Interview for Empathy
Interview for Empathy develop a series of W+H questions to understand the user's needs, emotions and motivation. The goal is to explore user along the timeline (user perspective) and while developing empathy and having a better understanding of the circumstances that cause the problem.
Step 3.
Empathize and define the problem of your customer highlight their story and understand their needs……
Storytelling
Collaborate to create several stories based off of a prior observation or interview with your cohort. Use the stories to validate your digital story of your persona. Work as a team in 3-5 member groups to discuss a quote from a particular user, with each team member sharing one user and their quote. Then as team find meaning to the quote. Finally, draw summarize findings.
Critical Items Diagram
Define what critical elements are needed to solve the problem based on your user research and observations. List critical elements as experiences and functions and future experiences and future functions that are needed to solve the problem.
Step 4.
Capture the story of your community and a new shared vision in a digital story……
Digital Storytelling
Use the information from your Empathizing Persona and Defining Problem Statement to create a Digital Story. With a Digital Story, you can engage your team, organization, and the general public in dynamic brainstorming sessions to help solve your persona's problem.
Brainstorming
Play your digital story. Collaborate with your team to brainstorm ideas. Follow the brainstorming guidelines as you work with your team to present, evaluate and rate ideas.
Step 5.
Collaborate as a community and brainstorm ideas……
Dot Voting
If needed**
Play your digital story. Utilize Dot Voting for evaluating and ranking ideas from brainstorming sessions. Begin by defining the criteria for ideas. Next, vote for the best ideas by placing a dot next to the idea. Cluster high-ranking ideas and evaluate then determine next steps.
NABC
Present ideas for constructive feedback with N.A.B.C. Begin with your problem statement or play your digital story and answer key questions on the Need, Approach, Benefit, and Competition in the context of the product offering.
Step 6.
Collaborate as a community to communicate ideas ……
Pitch Deck
A pitch deck is a presentation or slideshow created to provide an overview of a business, product, or idea to potential investors, clients, or partners. It is commonly used by startups and entrepreneurs to convey their business concept and attract funding or support.
Feedback Capture Grid
Collaborate to organize and cluster user feedback from test results to understand what improvements, new features or changes that need to be made to improve the prototype. Work as a team in 2-5 member groups collaborate to determine if the prototype is meeting the needs of the user. Collect and cluster test results identifying common problems.
Step 7.
Collaborate as a community to offer feedback……
Digital Storytelling
Collaborate with your team and use the information from your Empathizing Persona and Defining Problem Statement to create a Digital Story. Use your digital story as a prompt for collaborative ideation and conduct design thinking experiments to validate its narrative.
